Why Is My AC Freezing Up?
It sounds strange in Florida, but a frozen air conditioner is a common problem. Ice forms when the evaporator coil gets too cold, usually because of:
- Low airflow from a dirty filter, blocked vents or a failing blower motor
- Low refrigerant from a leak
- Dirty evaporator coil
- Collapsed or blocked ductwork
- Thermostat or fan settings that keep the system running too long
A frozen coil stops cooling your home, and when the ice melts it can overflow the drain pan and cause water leaks.
What To Do If Your AC Is Frozen
- Turn the cooling off at the thermostat.
- Turn the fan to ON to help the ice melt faster (this can take a few hours).
- Check and replace the air filter.
- Make sure supply vents and return grilles are open and clear.
- Watch the drain pan for overflow while the ice melts.
Don’t chip away at the ice, and don’t keep running the system in cool mode. That can damage the compressor, the most expensive part of your AC. If it freezes again after thawing, there’s an underlying problem that needs a technician.
