Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling?
In the Southwest Florida heat, an AC that runs but won’t cool is more than uncomfortable. It can quickly become an emergency. The most common causes we find are:
- Dirty air filter blocking airflow
- Failed capacitor or contactor, so the outdoor unit or fan won’t start
- Low refrigerant from a leak in the coil or lines
- Dirty condenser or evaporator coil that can’t move heat
- Frozen evaporator coil (see AC frozen up)
- Thermostat problems or wrong settings
- Clogged drain line tripping the float switch and shutting the system off
- Undersized or aging system that can’t keep up
What You Can Check Before Calling
A few safe things to check first:
- Make sure the thermostat is set to COOL and below room temperature.
- Replace the air filter if it’s dirty.
- Check your breaker panel for a tripped AC or air handler breaker. Reset it once. If it trips again, call us.
- Look at the outdoor unit. Is the fan spinning? Is it blocked by plants or debris?
- Check for water in the drain pan or a float switch that has shut the system off.
If you see ice on the lines, turn the system off and switch the fan to ON to let it thaw, then give us a call.
